Weeping cherry trees were in bloom and other trees had that light green tint of spring, <i>almost</i> budding leaves that leave just a wisp of spring color. I had decided to move to Portland four years ago and this trip was the beginning of the move. Portland has always felt like home and I was really excited to finally be making the transition. <br />
<br />
I took the light rail and then the bus to <a href="http://www.irvingtonguesthouse.com/Home.html">The Irvington Guesthouse</a> It was a short trip with me carrying my big traveling purse, and two rolling suitcases. As we approached my stop, I pulled the cord and maneuvered all of my luggage and me to the front as the driver eased the bus to a smooth stop. As I stepped off the bus the driver smiled and said, “Welcome home…and see, we ordered the sun especially for you today. Have a lovely day.”<br />
<br />
How did he know? I just grinned, said thanks, and enjoyed a magic moment in Portland, OR.Kathy Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00501787988524892873noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589129445997613565.post-24523289292613362062009-09-08T15:08:00.000-07:002009-09-08T15:08:45.173-07:00Well...it's been a while<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqD0ofgYnkY-PR45xPjs9TsCLQ3xd1jdCc64_jGC4VoBleSHGav4b4sRmOSQdND13wUg_wzkRa8f37XHsP0Os6ayMiepJz1MXdPwmsGd4CNtQ6k5EPUAf7aOrzoNoZo7voLA8ABFP9UCo/s1600-h/crownptvista09.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqD0ofgYnkY-PR45xPjs9TsCLQ3xd1jdCc64_jGC4VoBleSHGav4b4sRmOSQdND13wUg_wzkRa8f37XHsP0Os6ayMiepJz1MXdPwmsGd4CNtQ6k5EPUAf7aOrzoNoZo7voLA8ABFP9UCo/s320/crownptvista09.jpg" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: left;">I have been back in Portland since mid-July.... And this is the view of the Columbia River from Crown Point Vista. My first view of the Columbia River.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Then there was a stop at <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multnomah_Falls">Multonoma Falls.</a>.. Well, I would have needed a wide angle lens to take that photo...but click the link and you'll see why.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgdBdMwJHa2Pb5dUED_qCjxcIjxuQa38VmmV1RUFYHbWhAtTmwPeK2SKJEtwpz3utBTtjK3di8zgFGieH8LJd27wOSFu1wx6e3-nGN_rrUQRmkzW85zxhbjl13LfA1N7DA51IcGSPe2JU/s1600-h/longshthenge09.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgdBdMwJHa2Pb5dUED_qCjxcIjxuQa38VmmV1RUFYHbWhAtTmwPeK2SKJEtwpz3utBTtjK3di8zgFGieH8LJd27wOSFu1wx6e3-nGN_rrUQRmkzW85zxhbjl13LfA1N7DA51IcGSPe2JU/s320/longshthenge09.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
The next stop was Stonehenge. This is my shot and here's the<a href="http://www.columbiariverimages.com/Regions/Places/stonehenge.html"> link </a>to more info about this site. It's very interesting.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
And then on to <a href="http://www.maryhillmuseum.org/home.html">Maryhill Museum.</a> A charming little museum that has wonderful permanent and some temporary exhibits. The temporary exhibit when I was there was Ansel Adams photographs. I never tire of seeing his photographs. However, I think my favorite permanent exhibit was the<a href="http://www.maryhillmuseum.org/exhibits.html#theatre"> La Theatre de la Monde.</a> Although the Rodin exhibit is pretty spectacular too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLOmr-godKgBQBSEFt9orTaZBLgIP3gI4YG0DhYBOhqbkU0UBAZbnmP9_YoYn4RxSJbaUz2QhU3UBvYJJFqKstzVU1xPEA40PYaQE8OadjneIw2I_FNBmeDelBoE6bPghWGAMZB3-yynM/s1600-h/kdzhat09croppedfinal.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLOmr-godKgBQBSEFt9orTaZBLgIP3gI4YG0DhYBOhqbkU0UBAZbnmP9_YoYn4RxSJbaUz2QhU3UBvYJJFqKstzVU1xPEA40PYaQE8OadjneIw2I_FNBmeDelBoE6bPghWGAMZB3-yynM/s320/kdzhat09croppedfinal.jpg" /></a></div><br />

<br />
And this is me looking at the turbine windmills. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
And here are two windmill shots. This was the first time I saw turbine windmills. Pretty impressive and also, it seems, <a href="http://www.windaction.org/news/c98+116/">controversial</a>. I can tell you one thing. THEY ARE BIG...<br />

In general, Portland, OR is very gluten free friendly. <a href="http://www.urbanspoon.com/c/24/Portland-restaurants.html">Now, Urban Spoon Portland</a> , an Iphone app, has a pretty large gluten free dining section. I also think that Portland, OR is a National Treasure, but that's another post coming soon.<br /><br />So, during Sept. of 2008, I signed up for a Sur La Table cooking class: One Ingredient 5 Ways. The ingredient was figs...and the menu was Figs and Calamata Olive tapanade as the appetizer, Salad with Figs and Walnuts, Thick pork chops stuff with Figs and Apples on steamed spinach and rice pudding with figs for dessert. I like shopping at Sur La Table when I can but this was the first time I had been to Sur La Table's cooking class.<br /><br />My list of accolades is long on why I liked the Sur La Table's cooking school experience, including a simple tip on how to know when pork is done. However, what has stayed with me since I took the class last Sept. and why I think Sur La Table's Culinary program is a National Treasure, is because it was a superb, well rounded, safe food experience. Something that I hope to experience more and more. And Scott Hargrove and his ensemble performers are way ahead with this experience. Everything was cooked to order and scrumptious. What made it exceptional was the way it was presented and how well the enselmble worked together: As an experienced performance ensemble, on a par with Saturday Night Live. In the end, I felt as if I had been served a wonderful Birthday dinner. Although there were 10 or so other people in the kitchen I felt like dinner had been made especially for me. Unlike some people who cannot even be around flour, I can and can even work with it...but I don't eat any gluten. Scott, Scott and Emilee made sure my dinner was delicious, simply and elegantly presented, the food was safe for me to eat and is was sooooo good.<br /><br />If you enjoy being in the kitchen, want to learn to be in the kitchen and/or want an informative and delicious experience that can be gluten free, I highly recommend that you sign up for a class or two.<br /><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">From left to right</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Emilee Brown, </span></span><span style="font-family:lucida grande;"><span style="font-style: italic;">Scott Atkins </span></span><span style="font-family:lucida grande;"><span style="font-style: italic;">and Scott Hargrove<br /></span></span>Kathy Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00501787988524892873noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7589129445997613565.post-23609560477528036842008-09-13T12:01:00.000-07:002008-09-13T16:45:33.636-07:00Connections<div face="lucida grande" style="text-align: justify; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);"><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlMRQxdBFWecSXdudhrbO_sGcjDI7eda8ryEHDILt63YI93WRPx2j0zx1yUCvB2DFje1o5OnuMrGlcuJ5-5H_kWfBi37z9_Y7mxf7Eu3aaKTFCQc8kHJPcxlb0PBLLN4T3INs7rFWoDF4/s1600-h/Franc.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlMRQxdBFWecSXdudhrbO_sGcjDI7eda8ryEHDILt63YI93WRPx2j0zx1yUCvB2DFje1o5OnuMrGlcuJ5-5H_kWfBi37z9_Y7mxf7Eu3aaKTFCQc8kHJPcxlb0PBLLN4T3INs7rFWoDF4/s400/Franc.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245584935304509202" border="0" /></a><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153); font-weight: bold;font-family:lucida grande;font-size:130%;" >Meet Franc</span><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family:lucida grande;">Franc and Lauren live at the guest house here in Portland as she and Franc are relocating to Portland.
